Pass the potato salad, it’s National Picnic Month

If you haven’t seen a thermostat lately, summer is officially here. With longer days and warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to go outdoors and soak up some fresh air. According to the National Day Calendar, it’s also the perfect time for a picnic — originally founded in 1952, July is recognized as ‘National Picnic Month’. So, grab a blanket, pack a cooler full of finger foods, and round up the troops — it’s time to get out there and seize the day, people.

As busy adults, it’s tough for us to find time to stop and smell the roses every now and then — that’s where picnics come to the rescue. Want to spend some more quality time outdoors? This is the perfect opportunity to get out of the house and make it happen. Hosting a picnic gives you a perfect excuse to step away from your phone and just be present. You might be surprised what a refreshing change of pace it is to eat a meal outside and soak up a little Vitamin D.

How to have a great picnic

This isn’t rocket science, folks — if you want an awesome picnic, it’s all about keeping it simple! Here are a few tips to get you started.

Pick a spot

You don’t have to travel all the way across town to your local park — just find somewhere convenient, maybe somewhere that provides a decent amount of shade from the summer sun. Find a spot with plenty of room to get active and burn off some energy.

Plan a potluck

If you’re inviting a few people to your shindig, keep it loose and opt for a potluck. Coordinate who’s responsible for bringing what — something to dip, something to grill, something to drink — and bring all the pieces together for a great event.

Bring some music

Summertime has a soundtrack. When we think of July, we generally think of swimming pools, fireworks, and listening to September by Earth, Wind & Fire. This tip is completely optional but is generally a great option for picnics with larger groups. If you don’t already own a portable speaker, they’re reasonably priced and provide your picnic with the soundtrack it deserves. Looking for music suggestions? Have a little fun with it and encourage your guests to create a collaborative playlist!

Pack some entertainment

Summer is the season for yard games. Picnics are a great opportunity to relax, but it’s great to shake things up with a round of cornhole or ladders. Digital Trends compiled a list of some great yard games, many of which will only run you about $50. Every picnic is more fun with something to toss around.

Don’t invite any ants

We’re told they ruin picnics so make sure you keep them off the guest list. To be clear: it’s totally safe to invite your aunts — please don’t get us in trouble with your Aunt Kelly.
